HE BEGAN TO WORK WITH GLASS AS AN ART FORM IN 1962 AFTER NEARLY 35 YEARS AS AN ENGINEER IN THE GLASS INDUSTRY.
>> HE HOLDS OVER 55 PATENTS FOR GLASS AND GLASS RELATED PROCESSES.
YET GLASS ALONE IS NOT HIS ONLY MEDIUM.
UNTIL 1965 HE WAS VICE PRESIDENT OF JOHNS MILLS FIBERGLASS.
>> I THINK DEEP DOWN MY FIRST LOVE IS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT.
AND THAT COULD BE ANYTHING LIKE GLASS OR SPECIAL PURPOSE OR SPECIAL USES FOR GLASS.

AND BOTTLE FORMS ARE NICE.

BUT IN THOSE DAYS TIMES WERE HARD AND I WOULD RUN IT ONE DAY A WEEK TO PREVENT OVER TIME OR PLAYING TIME AND A HALF.
YOU COULD DO THAT TODAY.
THIS IS A WHOLE NEW BALLGAME.
I COULDN'T DO WHAT I USED TO DO.
I PRETTY MUCH DID WHAT I WANTED TO IN A FACTORY BECAUSE OF DEVELOPMENT.
WHEN I WAS IN THE FACTORY ITSELF.
IT WAS A DIFFERENT TIME.
IT WAS HARD TIMES AND YOU COULD DO MORE THINGS AND THE UNIONS WEREN'T AS STRONG AS THEY WERE NOW.
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.
I THINK THE UNIONS SERVED A GOOD PURPOSE PROVIDED THEY DON'T GET CARRIED AWAY.
THE WAY THE FORM CHANGES AS HE SWINGS IT.
AND WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH HOT GLASS.
I WANTED TO SAY WHY I THINK PEOPLE MAY PREFER MIXED GAS IT.
AND THAT IS MIX IS IN GLASS AS HE MAKES IT.
THE COLORS ARE HIS OWN.
AND THEN WHEN HE MAKES IT.
HE IS TRYING TO MAKE A PIECE OF GLASS THAT DOES THE MOST FOR THE COLOR THAT IS IN IT.
AND THE COLOR DOES A GREAT DEAL FOR THE GLASS.
SO IT ALL WORKS TOGETHER AND YOU HAVE SOMETHING UNUSUAL.
AND WHEN THE CRAFTSMAN IS IN THE PIECE, SO TO SPEAK, THEN IT BECOMES INDIVIDUAL AND THEN IF IT IS BEAUTIFUL WHAT MORE CAN YOU WANT?
>> I'M SORT OF AGAINST USING MIRRORS BECAUSE YOU CAN DO ALL KINDS OF TRICKS USING MIRRORS.
HAVING THE PIECE DO IT WITHOUT MIRRORS I'LL GO FOR.

USUALLY YOU THINK OF GLASS MADE OUT OF SAND SODA ASH AND LIME.
BUT YOU CAN MAKE GLASS WITHOUT THE USE OF SAND YOU CAN MAKE GLASSES THAT ARE AFFECTED BY VARIOUS LIGHT YOU CAN MAKE A FLASS THAT IS OPAQUE TO INFRA RED OR OPAQUE TO ULTRAVIOLET THAT YOU CAN DO TRICKS BY THE WAY BY CHANGING LIGHT THAT YOU COULD HARDLY TELL IT.
WHILE YOU WERE WATCHING IT, IT WOULD CHANGE COLORS.
BECAUSE IT ACTS AS A FILLER.
ART IS ART AND TECHNOLOGY IS TECHNOLOGY BUT TECHNOLOGY COMES BEFORE ART.
IT IS THE SCIENTIST THAT LEADS THE WAY.
AND ART IS ALWAYS BEHIND.
IT IS NONSENSE ON THE PART OF THE ARTIST.
THEY DON'T WANT TO BE INVOLVED IN TECHNOLOGY IT IS A BAD WORD.
BUT THEY NEED IT AND THEY WANT IT BUT THEY DON'T WANT IT UNDER THAT NAME.
THEY WANT TO HAND ME OUT SORT OF THING.
YOU CAN'T BE TOOLS.
THEY SAVE TIME.
IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT IS MUCH OF A TRICK TO MAKE A BLOCK FOR BLOCKING GLASS.
BUT IT IS EASIER IF YOU HAVE THE TOOL TO DO IT.
IT IS THAT SIMPLE.
TOOLS BECOMES PART OF YOU.
ALTHOUGH IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT IS USEFUL.
IT IS WHEN YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING.
I WAS ALWAYS IMPRESSED WHAT WENT ON AROUND A COAL MINE SUCH AS A TOOL PRESS AND AN ANVIL AND WHAT YOU COULD POUND OUT WITH IRON AND WHAT YOU COULD DO IF I HAD A LATHE AND WHAT YOU COULD DO AT MACHINE SHOPS WHAT YOU COULD DO WITH THINGS BEFORE THE MINES AND WORKING WITH AN INSTRUMENT COMPANY.
I FIND OUT THAT A HACK SAW DOES A BETTER JOB THAN A HACK SAW AND MILLING ATTACHMENTS THAT YOU COULD BUILD ANYTHING YOU WANT IF YOU HAVE THE METAL TO DO IT WITH.
THESE ARE THE BASIC TOOLS FOR WORKING METAL AND WHEN PEOPLE COME IN HERE THEY ASK ME.
DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE ALL OF THIS TO WORK ON GLASS?
I SAID NO YOU DON'T.
I HAPPEN TO LIKE MACHINERY AND SOME OF MY FRIENDS HAVE HORSES.
AND THESE THINGS DON'T EAT UNLESS THEY ARE WORKING.
AND I LOVE TOOLS.
THE HOUSE MIGHT HAVE A HOLE IN THE ROOF AND MAYBE BIRDS DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE DIRECTION TO FLY BUT I STILL HAVE A SHOP I THINK.

IT IS BECAUSE OF SO MANY TOOLS THAT WE HAVE THAT MAKES IT SO THAT THE IT DOESN'T REQUIRE THE SKILL.
IF YOU LOOK AT THOSE, I DON'T THINK IT WOULD LOOK LIKE MUCH OF ANYTHING.
IT WOULDN'T HAVE THE PATIENCE AND THE TIME.
IF THEY DID.
IT WOULD BE TOO EXPENSIVE IF THEY WERE CHARGING BY THE HOUR.
IT DOESN'T TAKE LONG TO LEARN TO RUN A MACHINE.

HE SAID I WANT TO LEARN BECAUSE MY CUSTOMERS ARE WAITING.

HOW CAN YOU TALK TO SOMEBODY OR ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE TERMINOLOGY.
HE SAID THAT IS NOT IMPORTANT THAT IS ONLY A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION.
