Some experts say the possible contamination could have been prevented.

The New Street Reservoir in Paterson has been providing water to hundreds of thousands of homes across Passaic County for years. But residents of Paterson, Passaic and parts of Clifton and Woodland Park have been under a boil-water advisory since Sept. 2. Passaic Valley Water Commission officials say the advisory was necessary after Tropical Storm Ida flooded the area.
